The Wall Street Journal Guide to Wine -- Including 300 Great Wine Values Don't let the title throw you, this book has nothing to do with investing in wine. The connection is that the authors, husband and wife team Dorothy J. Gaiter and John Brecher, also write the "Journal's" weekly wine column. The couple's approach to wine is an absolute delight, making the subject approachable, even for beginners. Readers are taken on a grape by grape tour of thirty of the world's most popular wines, complete with recommendations for each that won't break the pocketbook. But there's really no need to spend a lot of time ferreting out specific wines. Dorothy and John teach all you need to know to begin experimenting with confidence. Not at all what you'd expect from a book about wine -- it's more like having two knowledgeable friends take you under their wing and let you in on their secrets. There's warmth, humor and history interspersed with a lot of practical information about wine. Dorothy and John's love of wine, food and each other is inspiring. They understand the connection between food and the important times of our lives and they are able to communicate that connection to their readers. If you're anything like me, you won't be able to get through the entire book without having to make at least a couple of trips to the wine shop or some favorite restaurants, for new goodies to try.
