Author Pamela Spence goes into the folklore and mythology surrounding mead, including ceremonies and ritual connected with it. But don't worry, you don't have to be a pagan to enjoy mead or to make it.

The best parts of the book are the detailed instructions for brewing your own mead at home. Even beginners should have little trouble following Spence's easy to follow, light hearted instructions. Those who brew their own beer will find the equipment and techniques almost identical.

If you're experienced at mead (or if you're a beginner who wants to go further) Spence gives tips for putting together your own recipes and variations on the classic original. There's also an extensive resource section for mead makers and beekeepers (yes, it does take a fair amount of honey to make the "nectar of the gods").

Another great feature of this book, whether you intend to make your own mead or not, is its collection of seasonal drink recipes. These beverages, both non-alcoholic and alcoholic, use seasonal fruits and are sure to be a unique addition to any party. Home made mead would also make a terrific gift.
