Fear Of Wine - An Introductory Guide To The Grape
This a wonderful book for people who want to learn about wine. As you have probably gathered from the title, it's not the least but intimidating in its style, which is a great feature, because wine can be (although it shouldn't be) intimidating. Leslie Brenner's great sense of humor shows in her writing and is highlighted by Lettie Teague's whimsical illustrations. This was the first book on wine that I ever bought and I still refer to it frequently. It easy to read and fun. Too often books on wine are very dry and technical, but there's no need to worry about that here. The laid back style even makes it easier to remember what you've read. You'll learn how to pour and taste wine, develop a taste memory, order from a wine list, select a wine at the store and match food with wine. There's also great sidebars on how and why to "slosh", disarming a snotty waiter, ten great wines to bring to a dinner party, going beyond California Chardonnay and starting your own cellar for under $100.00. There's even pronunciation keys, so you'll speak like pro. There are two basic wine books that I highly recommend, Fear Of Wine and Wine For Dummies. I'd was hard pressed to choose between the two as both are excellent (Wine For Dummies, won out by a nose). Personally, I'm glad I have them both.
