A tan colored, large, flat bean, resembling a lima bean. Fresh fava beans come in pods that are inedible (unless the bean in question is extremely young). Very seasonal, grab fresh fava beans when you can get them and look for pods that aren't bulging at the seams, as this is a sign of age. Blanch the fresh beans before using to remove the tough, outer skin.
