Tips: Money Saving Tips

  • If you have a recipe that uses just egg whites, you can refrigerate the yolks for later use by storing them, unbroken, in a small bowl, covered with cold water for up to two days. FabulousFoods.com new (Added: 25-Aug-2003)
  • Saves bacon fat in the fridge. Uses the bacon grease to baste roasting chickens or turkeys, to add additional flavor when frying, even add it to potatoes when mashing. While it may not be the healthiest practice in the world, bacon fat does pack a powerful flavor punch, and as Emeril says Pork fat rules! Peter, Queens, NY new (Added: 25-Aug-2003)
  • Two ways to keep weevils away from grain, nuts and other seeds -- either store them in the refrigerator or pour in a container and add a pinch of salt and shuffle or shake the container so the salt can evenly distribute itself. Catherine, St. Lucia, West Indies new (Added: 25-Jan-2006)
  • Add half rhubard when making apple sauce.Good way to use up frozen rhubarb Cornwall Canada (Added: 25-Mar-2004)
  • Use those old poofy bath net scrubbies to scrub your fiberglass tubs and showers. They really work well with those spray on cleaners and they attack the soap scum but do not scratch the finish. Allyson Frantz,Vero Beach Florida (Added: 25-Mar-2004)
  • Always make two cups of tea with your "gourmet" teabag - and put one cup in the refrigerator for iced tea later. Alice,Wilmington, De new (Added: 26-May-2004)
  • Cooking pasta? Save the hot pasta water and rinse your dinner plates and cutlery in it after dinner. Food will slide off easily. Ecologically friendly too! Lisa, Olympia, WA new (Added: 26-May-2006)
  • Peel, chop, mince or grate fresh ginger, put into a jar and fill jar with either Vodka or Gin before refrigerating. I prefer the Vodka, as it has no strong aroma to interfere with the scent of the ginger. The liquor doesn't have to be fancy, but whichever you use, will keep the ginger perfectly fresh indefinitely. I've kept a jar of ginger in the refrigerator for years and just refill it whenever the amount of ginger begins to get low. Adding a bit of the liquor to your recipe can be tasty too. Barbara Gregory-Pearlman new (Added: 27-Jul-2005)
  • We try to recycle everything. You can make a great campfire starter by taking empty egg cartons and filling the compartments with the lint from the dryer trap. Then melt down the left over wax from candles around the house, pour over the lint and there you have it, instant fire starters. Just break off a few cubes and throw on top of your tinder, charcoal, what have you. Neil new (Added: 27-Mar-2005)
  • For those messy black heel marks on the floor. Put on a pair of white soled tennis shoes and twist your heel over the top of black heel mark. It will vanish. Anita, Spokane,WA new (Added: 28-Dec-2003)
