Tips: Food Storage Tips

  • Take off leaves and wash. Place upside down whole on a paper towel on a plate. Put into the refrigerator. They will last for several days like this. Linda Hicks, Atlantic City NJ new (Added: 16-Jan-2006)
  • To keep my brown sugar soft, I purchase brown sugar in the plastic bags (not the boxed version). After opening, I place the brown sugar in the orginal plastic bag inside an appropriately sized ziploc bag. Easy to store and always stays soft. Mary Beth, Baltimore, MD new (Added: 16-Jul-2004)
  • I keep a large supply of dried vegetables on hand. It saves time shopping, and also saves money as I cook for one, and otherwise have to throw away a lot of spoiled veggies. Lynda Norvitch, St. Paul, MN new (Added: 17-Dec-2003)
  • I buy ground beef in bulk and prepare for several meals in advance. I cook 5 or 6 lbs at a time and drain. I add taco seasoning, sloppy joe sauce, and leave some plain and freeze in vacuum sealer bags. I also add seasoning to the ground beef before I shape into patties and freeze. Saves lots of time and mess camping and on nights when time is short. Jeanne in Port Republic, MD new (Added: 17-May-2006)
  • Fed up with scraping mold from stored cheese, I now store cheese in a plastic tub filled with olive oil. Voila! No more mold. Diamondjohn, Danville, VA new (Added: 17-Nov-2004)
  • I Used to fight the hardened brown suger problem. I now store my brown sugar in large jam or pickle jars that have been washed through the dishwasher (for sterilization). Soft sugar everytime! Doris, Ottawa-Canada new (Added: 17-Oct-2003)
  • Before storing fine china, place a coffee filter between each plate, bowl etc. Napkins also work well. Tammy, Dallas, TX new (Added: 18-Mar-2005)
  • If you hate to throw out cookies just because they have gotten a little hard, place them in a ziplock sandwich bag with a piece of bread overnight. The next day you'll have fresh, soft cookies again. Tammy, Dallas, TX new (Added: 19-Mar-2005)
  • WE HAVE DISCOVERD THAT IF YOU PUT YOUR LETTUCE IN A PLASTIC BOWL AND COVER IT WITH SARAN QUICK WRAPS, THE COVERS WITH ELASTIC AROUND THE EDGE, LETTUCE KEEPS FOR UP TO 4 WEEKS WITH VERY LITTLE BROWNING. Renee, Walt Disney World new (Added: 19-Nov-2003)
  • When using only part of a bell pepper, cut it from the bottom or the sides, leave the seeds attached because they hold the moisture. You can put the rest in a resealable plastic bag and use it up to 4 days later. It won't be mushy. Tesha, Granger, IN new (Added: 20-Feb-2005)
