Tips: Food Storage Tips

  • To save fresh ginger root for a long time: peel the root, put into a lidded jar, cover with dry sherry. Put in refrigerator after cutting into smaller chunks. The ginger will stay fresh and you'll have ginger flavored sherry to use in cooking. Beverly, Connecticut new (Added: 9-Feb-2005)
  • When bagging produce in the store I take a second to turn the plastic bag inside out before putting the produce in. When I empty it at home I turn it again and it's clean & ready to go for further use. If theres moisture, swish it off before turning again and the original "inside" will be dry & clean. Barbara, Arlington WA new (Added: 9-Feb-2006)
  • Some recipes call for half an onion. We sometimes lose the other half because it was forgotten in the frige and dries out. Chop and freeze the other half right away, and it's saved and ready for the next recipe. Florence, Mtn. Home, ID new (Added: 9-Sep-2005)
