Tips: Cooking and Food Prep Tips

  • To keep lettuce fresher longer wrap a dry paper towel around the root end of the lettuce head and store in a zipper close bag. The paper towel will absorb the excess water keeping the lettuce fresh and crisp. Karen, State College, PA new (Added: 20-Jun-2005)
  • My new favorite tip (and it is not my own)is to open the dishwasher door before spraying pans or dishes with nonstick spray and hold the pan or dish over the door. There is no mess on the counter or sink and it all washes away when you wash the dishes! Bettye VanderVeen, Bentonville, AR (Added: 20-Mar-2004)
  • Crumble uncooked ramen noodles to top a salad. Also put all salad ingredients into zip lock bag, add a small amount of salad dressing & shake inside the bag before dividing into individual bowls. This cuts calories from fatty dressing. Linda (Added: 20-Sep-2006)
  • Instead of buying precooked bacon, buy 2 or 3 pounds of thick bacon and cook on a cookie sheet in the oven for 15 minutes and freeze it. It microwaves well and can be taken on camping trips for easy reheating and not all the bacon grease. Dan, Round Rock, TX new (Added: 21-Nov-2004)
  • Place a few pieces of dry bread in the broiler pan when broiling meats to soak up dripping fat. This can eliminate smoking fat as well as reduce the chance that the fat will catch fire. Jenny Wanderscheid new (Added: 22-Feb-2005)
  • To make nice round hamburgers, place a round meat ball between wax paper and mash with a clear dinner plate. You can watch your progress and make hamberger size to your specifications. This also makes patties ready to freeze and easy to seperate when ready to thaw. Earl McCook, Ne. new (Added: 22-Mar-2005)
  • To remove the odor after cutting an onion, rub your hands over a stainless steel spoon or a stainless steel kitchen faucet. Joy in Delaware new (Added: 23-Feb-2006)
  • When adding salt to water for cooking (pasta or potatoes, etc.), wait until water comes to a boil, and then add. Adding salt to pot before water boils can cause pitting and discoloration on the bottom of the pan. Barbara, Riverside, CA new (Added: 23-Jan-2005)
  • You know that onion or garlic smell left on your fingers after you cut them? Well no more, all you have to do is rub your finger tips inside of your metal sink and it takes the smell away. Valérie, Lennoxville,QC new (Added: 23-May-2005)
  • Many people object to chopping onions because it takes time and makes you cry and this is a shame as loads of dishes require chopped onion as a basis. So to avoid this task every time you cook, take 20 onions or so, chop them all and freeze them in a plastic bag. Any time a recipe requires onion, just take a handful out of the freezer. Richard.K -Derby, England new (Added: 24-Apr-2005)
