Tips: Cooking and Food Prep Tips

  • Before squeezing the juice out of a lemon, roll it on the bench first then cut it in half and then squeze it , this makes all the juice come out faster. Danielle, Sydney, Australia new (Added: 17-Apr-2004)
  • I keep a large supply of dried vegetables on hand. It saves time shopping, and also saves money as I cook for one, and otherwise have to throw away a lot of spoiled veggies. Lynda Norvitch, St. Paul, MN new (Added: 17-Dec-2003)
  • I would like to share this tip for making a wonderful herb-tea with all of you out there. It's surprisingly refreshing, can be had hot or cold and is great for your skin! Bring a cooking pot with 1ltr of water to the boil. Add 25 gr of fresh lemon-thyme, a good squeeze of lemon and 1 cube of cane sugar. Let it boil for 5 min. Enjoy! Waazi, Antwerp, Belgium new (Added: 17-Feb-2005)
  • When decorating cakes, put icing into a piece of saran wrap, wrap and twist the ends together. Cut one end off and insert into bag to pipe. This saves on clean up and mess. Also handy for when using several icing colors and you have only one piping bag!You can also stripe your plastic wrap and add different colors to your icing! Michelle Anglin-Lanett,AL new (Added: 17-Jul-2005)
  • I buy ground beef in bulk and prepare for several meals in advance. I cook 5 or 6 lbs at a time and drain. I add taco seasoning, sloppy joe sauce, and leave some plain and freeze in vacuum sealer bags. I also add seasoning to the ground beef before I shape into patties and freeze. Saves lots of time and mess camping and on nights when time is short. Jeanne in Port Republic, MD new (Added: 17-May-2006)
  • No mess buttered bowls! Instead of dealing with greasy fingers or wasting wax or paper towels, next time you finish a stick of butter -- don’t throw the paper away. Instead, fold in half and store in a zip lock bag in the fridge. Next time you need to prepare a buttered bowl or pan, use the buttered paper. Tammy, Dallas, TX new (Added: 18-Mar-2005)
  • When cutting bar cookies or cakes, use a plastic knife with serrated edge to get very smooth edges. Ann Throneberry, Shelbyville, TN new (Added: 18-May-2004)
  • Reduce your sugar by 1/4. Turn your oven down by 1/4 degree also. Bake cookies for the amount of time on recipe, they are a bit soft but once cooled you have a wonderful chewy cookie. Sharon DuBois new (Added: 18-Sep-2004)
  • When decorating a fruit salad bowl, use the top of a pineapple lightly dusted with confectioner's sugar, and put on top. It looks pretty and makes use of the pineapple top. Gerry , London new (Added: 2-Sep-2005)
  • When using only part of a bell pepper, cut it from the bottom or the sides, leave the seeds attached because they hold the moisture. You can put the rest in a resealable plastic bag and use it up to 4 days later. It won't be mushy. Tesha, Granger, IN new (Added: 20-Feb-2005)
