Tips: Camping and Outdoor Cooking Tips

  • I always hated it when I would climb into my camper and find that the journey to the campgrounds made the paper towel roll unwind. So I got this great tip off an RV show. Take a 2 liter bottle and rinse it out well. Cut off the mouth and bottom section and slice down the center. It easily wraps around the towels and keeps them from unraveling during your trips. Also if you have no camper and maybe just a pop-up or a canopy, use a bungee cord to hold the paper towel roll out of the way. Thread the bungee cord through the roll and hook both ends to a bar under the canopy. You can easily tear off sheets and it stays dry beneath the shelter of the canopy. • To keep roll of paper towels from unrolling while traveling, I use a long hair clip on the side of the roll, maybe a 1/4 or 1/2" into roll. Keeps roll in place and you always have a hair-clip to use as well. Jean Driesbaugh, Monroeton,Pa. new (Added: 16-Aug-2004)
  • Pre-mix spices for a recipe before leaving home and store them in an empty plastic film container. Joe, Bakersfield, California new (Added: 16-Dec-2004)
  • Put meats and/or frozen foods in the bottom of a tall water cooler and fill with ice. Stays colder longer because the meat is at the bottom and the ice melts slower because of the smaller circumference and deeper depth. Nancy, Winston-Salem,North Carolina new (Added: 16-Sep-2003)
  • To make fruit salad in a bag: Add a can of fruit cocktail, a can of pineapple chunks (both can of fruits not drained), a cup of coconut, a box of instant vanilla pudding, and a banana to a plastic bag and seal. Squeeze the bag and serve the salad right from the bag. This is even better if chilled. Granny Bev Conrad, Mt (Added: 16-Sep-2003)
  • I buy ground beef in bulk and prepare for several meals in advance. I cook 5 or 6 lbs at a time and drain. I add taco seasoning, sloppy joe sauce, and leave some plain and freeze in vacuum sealer bags. I also add seasoning to the ground beef before I shape into patties and freeze. Saves lots of time and mess camping and on nights when time is short. Jeanne in Port Republic, MD new (Added: 17-May-2006)
  • I stuff our empty tp roll with dryer lint. These make great fire starters. Plus they are free! Renee, ohio new (Added: 18-May-2006)
  • Before you store a cooler between camping trips, drop in a coffee filter with a few drops of Vanilla Extract on it. No more musty smell or taste in your cooler! Mary Clare Sussex, NJ new (Added: 21-Feb-2005)
  • Instead of buying precooked bacon, buy 2 or 3 pounds of thick bacon and cook on a cookie sheet in the oven for 15 minutes and freeze it. It microwaves well and can be taken on camping trips for easy reheating and not all the bacon grease. Dan, Round Rock, TX new (Added: 21-Nov-2004)
  • Make good use of that dryer lint by storing in a baggie and using as camp fire starter. It doesn't take up any room and works great. Greg, Flagstaff AZ new (Added: 22-Apr-2005)
