Tips: Camping and Outdoor Cooking Tips

  • When using dryer lint for a fire starter use lint from 100% cotton fabrics, such as towels. Cotton will burn, man made fibers such as nylon only melts and doesn't make a flame needed to start a camp fire. Susie -- Morris, Ks new (Added: 26-Sep-2006)
  • Cooking breakfast for a group, while camping, can be very messy. Our group beats eggs in a bowl and dips out (a measuring cup works well) what looks like 2 eggs per person, into a clean zip lock freezer bag. We add what ever extras we want, such as chopped peppers, onions ,cheese, ham ect. that we have pre-chopped at home and put into baggies.Close the freezer bags and we write our names onto our bags and place into a pot of boiling water. They cook in about 10 minutes or until not runny. The eggs get fluffy when they are done. Pour out onto a paper plate and enjoy. This has very little clean up and everyone gets the omelettes they enjoy. Kim Goodin new (Added: 27-Sep-2006)
  • My husband loves breakfast burritos, but they are a pain to make from scratch in the RV. I cook up my eggs, sausage, bacon (whatever you like best)at home. I sometimes sautee fresh mushrooms and/or onions as well. I store all in plastic bags which take up little room in the fridge or cooler. If you take along a bag each of shreeded cheese and flour tortillas, you are in business. Just heat up the eggs and meat in the microwave or a skillet, warm the tortillas, wrap and enjoy. My husband likes salsa in his, but I like country gravy in mine. Maggie Lawler, Port Orchard, WA new (Added: 1-Mar-2006)
  • To chop onions the easy way, start by cutting off the stem end, then peel the skin back to the root, KEEPING THE SKIN ATTACHED. Holding the skin to steady the onion, cut in half nearly to the root end, then at right angles to the first cut, 3 or 4 more cuts nearly to the root end. Next, still holding the root end by the skin, slice finely across the onion from the stem end, the result will be nicely chopped onion. And it takes longer to explain than to do it! Liza, SW France new (Added: 1-Nov-2005)
  • Use a ball of aluminim foil to clean your grill. Make a ball as big as your fist and just rub away grease and grime. Susan Brockway, PA new (Added: 10-Jul-2004)
  • When cooking ground beef for Tacos or other Mexican dishes, cover the meat with water in a saucepan, break up with a fork, or potato masher, season well with beef and chicken boullion, and garlic powder, when cooked, drain off fat and water and you've got tasty meat without all of the fat. (You won't miss the good taste of the browned meat, I promise.) I generally add a can of fat free refried beans and use just a little of the water from the meat to moisten, then our Mexican Dishes are bean and beef ready. Enjoy! Nana Jams new (Added: 11-Oct-2005)
  • To make freezer packs for your coolers, make juice and pour into plastic pop bottles, leaving room at the top for expansion. Freeze, then add to your cooler. Saves space you get to drink it when its defrosted. Perfect for hot sunny days. Lorna Ontario, Canada new (Added: 12-Jan-2005)
  • Use pita bread instead of regular loaves on camping trips. Pita does not crush, takes up less space and you can fill them with an assortment food. Maggie, Milwaukee, WI new (Added: 12-Oct-2005)
  • When tent camping for several days, I freeze all meats and pack a "food only" cooler from bottom to top in the order that I have planned meals. This keeps kids out of the cooler and it basically works like a refrigerator. Denise, McDonough, GA new (Added: 12-Sep-2005)
  • To prevent bacon from curling up in the pan during frying, pierce raw bacon with a fork or knife down each slice before frying. You can poke several slices at a time. Stacey, Austin, TX new (Added: 12-Sep-2005)
