Review: I have never met Anissa Helou, but I know I like her. Seems we share an affinity for "street food," those delectable dishes commonly sold by street vendors and from booths at fairs, festivals and events. After traveling too many times with friends who are too conservative, I'm always happy to make the acquaintance of another "street foodie."

Since some of my favorite ethnic dishes from my travels came from street vendors, I was excited to see this volume, and it didn't disappoint. Cold or hot, sweet or savory, street food is by nature designed to tempt the senses of passersby.

Anyone who has done much international traveling knows from experience that street food in other countries bares little resemblance to the greasy, battered messes that commonly pass for vendor food at many American fairs and festivals. This food runs the gamut from snacks to soups, barbecue to desserts, and much more. More often than not, the fare is also wholesome and healthy - although to be sure, fried foods are also well represented, so there's a great balance in the recipes here.

There's also an eclectic ethnic blend, as the author presents favorite street foods from Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. Some are familiar staples the world over; others will be entirely new (and delicious) territory. A world traveler and world class food writer, with each recipe Helou shares fascinating stories, observations and histories.

Chapters include: Soups; Snacks, Salads, and Dips; Pizzas, Breads, and Savory Pastries; Sandwiches; Barbecues; One-Pot Meals; Sweets and Desserts; Drinks.
