This incredible French toast recipe is a perfect addition to any special occasion breakfast.

Ingredients

  • French Toast
  • 8, 3/4-inch thick slices French bread
  • 3 large eggs
  • 3/4 cup whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 pinch nutmeg
  • 4 ounces cream cheese, room temperature
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 2 tablespoons (1/4 stick) butter
  • Lemon vanilla syrup
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 lemon, zested and juiced
  • 1 vanilla bean, or 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Directions

  2. 1. Mix together cream cheese, orange zest,sugar and ground ginger
  3. 2. Sandwich 1 ounce of the cream cheese between the 8 pieces of French bread
  4. 3. Whisk eggs, milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon and nutmeg and place in a pie plate
  5. 4. Dip the 4 stuffed bread slices into egg mixture, turn and coat completely
  6. 5. Melt butter in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat
  7. 6. Add dipped bread to the skillet
  8. 7. Cook until golden brown, about two minutes per side
  9. 8. Serve with the lemon vanilla syrup

  11. Yields 2 cups
  12. 1. In a medium-sized sauce pan, bring the sugar, water and lemon zest to a boil over medium-high heat
  13. 2. Split the vanilla bean in half lengthwise and remove the seeds by scraping the inside using the back of a pairing knife
  14. 3. Lower the temperature of the sugar mixture to low and add the vanilla bean and seeds
  15. 4. Allow the mixture to steep over low heat for 15 minutes
  16. 5. Remove from the heat and stir in the fresh lemon juice
