Citrus French toast with lemon vanilla syrup

This incredible French toast recipe is a perfect addition to any special occasion breakfast.
Ingredients
- French Toast
- 8, 3/4-inch thick slices French bread
- 3 large eggs
- 3/4 cup whole milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 pinch nutmeg
- 4 ounces cream cheese, room temperature
- 1 tablespoon orange zest
- 1 teaspoon ground ginger
- 2 tablespoons (1/4 stick) butter
- Lemon vanilla syrup
- 1 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 lemon, zested and juiced
- 1 vanilla bean, or 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
Directions
- French Toast
- 1. Mix together cream cheese, orange zest,sugar and ground ginger
- 2. Sandwich 1 ounce of the cream cheese between the 8 pieces of French bread
- 3. Whisk eggs, milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon and nutmeg and place in a pie plate
- 4. Dip the 4 stuffed bread slices into egg mixture, turn and coat completely
- 5. Melt butter in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat
- 6. Add dipped bread to the skillet
- 7. Cook until golden brown, about two minutes per side
- 8. Serve with the lemon vanilla syrup

- Yields 2 cups
- 1. In a medium-sized sauce pan, bring the sugar, water and lemon zest to a boil over medium-high heat
- 2. Split the vanilla bean in half lengthwise and remove the seeds by scraping the inside using the back of a pairing knife
- 3. Lower the temperature of the sugar mixture to low and add the vanilla bean and seeds
- 4. Allow the mixture to steep over low heat for 15 minutes
- 5. Remove from the heat and stir in the fresh lemon juice
