Note from Cheri:
These traditional Mexican fried bread square puff up beatutifully during cooking and are traditionally served with honey or honey butter. Try serving these the next time the gang has a craving for doughnuts.

1 tsp. salt
2 T shortening
3/4 cup cold water

oil for deep frying

confectioner's sugar and cinnamon for dusting

Sift the dry ingredients together. Cut in the shortening until the mixture is the texture of coarse cornmeal. Add the water gradually to form a dough. Knead on a lightly floured surface until smooth.

Roll dough thinly and cut it into small squares, about 3 inches. Heat oil until hot (375°F.). Fry bread until puffed and golden brown on both sides. Drain on paper towels and dust with powdered sugar and cinnamon. Serve with honey or honey butter.
