Note from Cheri:
These traditional Mexican fried bread square puff up beatutifully
during cooking and are traditionally served with honey
or honey
butter. Try serving these the next time the gang
has a craving for doughnuts.
Sift
the dry ingredients together. Cut
in the shortening until the mixture is the texture of coarse cornmeal.
Add the water gradually to form a dough. Knead
on a lightly floured surface until smooth.
Roll dough thinly and cut it into small squares, about 3 inches.
Heat oil until hot (375°F.). Fry bread until puffed and golden
brown on both sides. Drain on paper towels and dust with powdered
sugar and cinnamon. Serve with honey or honey
butter.
