Review: As this stylish and beautifully produced book is about Mexican art almost as much as it is about Mexican cuisine, you may be tempted to leave it on your living room coffee table. After all it's filled with glorious full color photos of the famous art collection from the equally famous Austin, Texas restaurant. I say you “might” be tempted, because in between the photos of the intriguing artwork are photos of the finished recipes, which are sure to elicit serious cravings, which in turn will cause the book to commute between living room and kitchen.

When Tom Gilliland and Miguel Ravago opened Fonda San Miguel over thirty years ago, they went against the Tex-Mex trend and instead based their menus around authentic cuisine that reflected the major culinary centers of Mexico - Oaxaca, Yucatan, Puebla, and Vera Cruz. In order to commemorate their 30th anniversary, the pair hrefeased this book containing over 100 of the restaurant's most popular and signature dishes. Between the recipes are some of the favorite art pieces from the restaurant's extensive collection along with notes that will better acquaint you with the artists and their work.

While some of the recipes are complex, the authors have made them accessible to home cooks. Most of the recipes - like the three examples below -- are surprisingly simple to make. Supplementary sections contain tips on buying and cooking with the various ingredients as well as information on basic recipe components, cooking equipment, and mail order sources.

Chapters include: The Fonda San Miguel Story; A Note to the Cook; Appetizers and Beverages; Salads; Soups; Entrees; Fine Wine with Mexican Food; Hacienda Buffet; Tortillas and Breads; Desserts; Basic Preparations; Unique Ingredients and Techniques; Basic Equipment; mail Order Sources.
