Review: What a great book for people with gourmet taste but not a lot of time to spend in the kitchen. While not a “quick and easy” cookbook per se, the recipes are nonetheless simple to prepare.

Super chef Michael Lomonaco (of New York City's famed 21 and host of the Travel Channel's Epicurious) maintains that a restaurant's nightly specials have a lot in common with home cooking. In fact, since home cooks usually have no set menu, every night's dishes are “nightly specials.”

In this book he blurs the line, inspiring home cooks to try new things and become more creative and innovative in their culinary creations. Cooking this way also allows you to take advantage of seasonal produces and supermarket specials.

The recipes are an eclectic mix of gourmet yet unpretentious dishes that suit nearly every occasion where there are hungry people waiting to be fed - from casual snacks to formal dinners and everything in between. While the primary ingredients may be basic - seafood, poultry, meat, vegetables and fruits, the final plates are all worthy of being served at a fine restaurant.

Full color photos of many of the recipes will further inspire you to put down the book and get into the kitchen. Each recipe comes with suggested variations so you can customize it and/or use ingredients you already have on hand.

Chapters include: Something Special, Nightly; A New Leaf - Salads; Daily Breads - Snacks, Sandwiches, and Pizzas; Souper Bowls - Soups, Chowders, and Stews; True Grits - Pasta and grains; the Shell Game - Shellfish Large and Small; On the Line - Finfish from Sea to Stream; Winging It - Poultry; Prime Ribs and Final Cuts - Meat and Game; You Want Fries With That? -- Potato and Vegetable Side Dishes; Just Desserts - Simple Sweets and Grand Finales.
