| Author Notes: | These traditional Mexican fried bread squares puff up beautifully during cooking and are usually served with honey or honey butter. Try serving these the next time the gang has a craving for doughnuts. |
| Ingredients: |
2 cups flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon salt 2 tablespoons shortening 3/4 cup cold water oil for deep frying confectioner's sugar and cinnamon for dusting |
| Instructions: |
Sift the dry ingredients together. Cut in the shortening until the mixture is the texture of coarse cornmeal. Add the water gradually to form a dough. Knead on a lightly floured surface until smooth.
Roll dough thinly and cut it into small squares, about 3 inches. Heat oil until hot (375°F.). Fry bread until puffed and golden brown on both sides. Drain on paper towels and dust with powdered sugar and cinnamon. Serve with honey or honey butter. |
