Most
of the recipes I've seen in the past for brain gelatin molds have focused on achieving
a gross looking"gray matter" color. While this might be anatomically
correct, trust me, it won't make people want to eat it, regardless of how good
it might taste. The infamous Kitty
Litter Cake gets the same reaction -- nobody actually wants to eat the
darn thing, but it sure is funny.
So... I developed my brain gelatin molds more with taste in mind, which usually means the colors, if not the shape, are at least somewhat palatable. This recipe makes a gelatin version of a of a White Irish Russian cocktail (vodka, Kahlua and a little Irish Cream thrown in for good measure). It makes a dramatic statement on a Halloween buffet table. The hand in the photo directly below is just the recipe below, with adornment. The hand in the photo at the bottom of the page has been painted with food coloring -- either directly out of the bottle for liquid, or thinned with a little water for paste type. THIS DISH IS FOR ADULTS ONLY. Be sure to warn your guests -- this is the equivalent of drinking a cocktail. Limit quantities accordingly and always DESIGNATE A DRIVER! |
| Ingredients: |
1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon unflavored gelatin powder 3/4 cup milk 3/4 cup liquid vanilla flavored coffee creamer 1/3 cup vodka 1/3 cup Kahlua 1/3 cup Irish cream liqueur |
| Instructions: |
Makes 1 Hand Mold -- 2 1/2 Cups
Pour milk and coffee creamer into a small saucepan and sprinkle with gelatin. Whisk the mixture well, then let it sit for 3 minutes. Place the pan over medium heat and bring to a simmer, Whisking frequently to insure that gelatin dissolves. Immediately remove the pan from the heat, pour contents into another bowl and let the mixture cool for about 20 minutes. Stir in the alcohol. Stir well and pour into the prepared gelatin Mold. Chill until firm -- at least 4 hours. To unmold, dip the bottom of mold in a bowl filled with hot water, taking care to not let any water get into the mold. Dipping the mold for a few seconds helps to loosen the gelatin from the mold. Remove from water and dry off the bottom of the mold. Place a serving platter over the bottom of the mold and flip both over. Carefully remove the Mold from the gelatin. Optional GarnishesI like to serve different Garnishes with this recipe, for instance: chocolate sauce, chopped nuts and/or sweetened coconut. BUY THE BRAIN and Other Creepy Halloween Molds! |
