Serving in the Army Catering Corps -- The ACC

Dear Friends.

I am probably one of the few surviving army trained chiefs still cooking!  The Army Catering Corps (ACC) was disbanded some years ago in order to save money, much to the horror of the squaddies who cherished our cooking.

I and many thousands like me were trained in Aldershot army school of cookery to a very high standard.  Some became hospital chefs, some became officers mess chefs, but the bulk were other ranks of cooks. 

I did my two years NS in Cyprus from 1955 to 1957 and I also saw service in Suez.After my NS days I re-enlisted again and became a officers mess chief in the Joint Services Staff College in Amersham, Bucks.  It was whilst here I cooked for the likes of The Queen Mother and The Earl of Mountbatten, my dishes were dressed Salome  and Cream of Chicken and Mushroom soup (the Queen Mum came back for seconds of the soup).

But army life and marriage are hard task masters and my darling wife won the day.  Still I look back on those days with fond memories and pride.
