Author Notes: This clever Halloween cake recipe, that frightfully resembles a well used kitty litter box, is actually delicious, despite its appearance. For the proper presentation, use a brand new (and definitely unused) plastic cat litter box and spoon it onto plates with a new (NEVER used) pooper scooper.

Be warned, generally this cake will not get eaten much. People just can't seem to get back the appearance, no matter how good it may taste. Go figure.

Ingredients: 1 spice or German chocolate cake mix
1 white cake mix
2 large packages vanilla instant pudding mix, prepared
1 large package vanilla sandwich cookies
green food coloring
12 small Tootsie Roll candies

1 new kitty litter pan
1 new kitty litter pan liner
1 new pooper scooper
Instructions:

Prepare cake mixes and bake according to directions (any size pans).

Prepare pudding mix and chill until ready to assemble.

Crumble white sandwich cookies in small batches in food processor, scraping often. Set aside all but about 1/4 cup. To the 1/4 cup cookie crumbs, add a few drops green food coloring and mix until completely colored.

When cakes are cooled to room temperature, crumble into a large bowl. Toss with half the remaining white cookie crumbs and the chilled pudding. Important: mix in just enough of the pudding to moisten it. You don't want it too soggy. Combine gently.

Line a new, clean kitty litter box. Put the cake/pudding/cookie mixture into the litter box.

Put 3 unwrapped Tootsie rolls in a microwave safe dish and heat until soft and pliable. Shape ends so they are no longer blunt, curving slightly. Repeat with 3 more Tootsie rolls bury them in the mixture. Sprinkle the other half of cookie crumbs over top. Scatter the green cookie crumbs lightly on top of everything -- this is supposed to look like the chlorophyll in kitty litter.

Heat 3 Tootsie Rolls in the microwave until almost melted. Scrape them on top of the cake; sprinkle with cookie crumbs. Spread remaining Tootsie Rolls over the top. For the coup de gras take one Tootsie Roll and heat until pliable, hang it over the side of the kitty litter box, sprinkling it lightly with cookie crumbs. Place the box on a newspaper and sprinkle a few of the cookie crumbs around for a truly disgusting effect!

Further notes:
I had a reader write in saying this recipe only needed half the amount of pudding. I personally liked the cake with the amount given in this recipe. But feel free to use this as a loose guideline, use more or less as you see the need. Also, since the layer of cookies (with the chloropyll green specks, covers the top, you could really use any flavor or flavors or cakes underneath.

Last but not least, you can also opt not to crumble the cakes, but rather layer them in the pan with the layers of pudding in between (much like you would layer a trifle into a trifle dish), sprinkle the top layer of pudding with a heavy layer of crumbled cookies. Same effect, different texture entirely to the dessert.

I made this for work yesterday and it was the talk of the office. Most people were grossed out and one looked simply horrified. I did cheat on the cakes and went to my local bakery and purchased a 1/4 sheet of vanilla cake and 1/4 of chocolate cake. I also used pistachio pudding and a few Milk Duds. When I sent out the e mail to my team to let them know there was Kitty Litter cake I included a picture of a black cat and wrote "contents of cake NOT donated by this cat".. :-) All of the cake went except for 2 of the tootsie rolls.

We recommend adding a couple of drops of green food color to the cookies when crumbling them up in your food processor.  Here are the instructions from the recipe.

"Crumble white sandwich cookies in small batches in food processor, scraping often. Set aside all but about 1/4 cup. To the 1/4 cup cookie crumbs, add a few drops green food coloring and mix until completely colored."

You could substitute a drop or 2 of black if you want the crumbles gray.
how do i make it more realistic

The plain cookie crumbles looked like plain cookie crumbles. How can i make gray crumbles? I tried lightly spraying with black food coloring and water but the turned too dark. HELP. I want to make this for work for Halloween, I work at a small cafe.

I agree with Brandy. If you don't like it, don't make it. It's a great cake and kids love it BECAUSE it's gross.
Way to be Rude

I think the idea is cute, especially for Halloween with a cute black cat theme or for April Fool's Day. I think MOST people would laugh at it out of the sheer creativity it took to put that together. Except Janet, who chooses to use comment boards to be negitive towards someone sharing something. Wonder how often she gets out?

I don't see what this has to do with Halloween.
Also if the people you know laugh at crap like this you should encourage them to get out of the house more often.  There's a whole world out there that doesn't involve poop jokes.
Making Kitty Litter More Appetizing

I was asked once again by a friend to make this cake for a party.  I changed the recipe and essentially made my fruit and angle food cake trifle, but layered it in the kitty litter pan, then topped it with the crumbled cookies and tootsie rolls, as outlined in this recipe.  Although people were reluctant to dig into at first, once they started, this version disappeared.  Find the trifle recipe here

The look of the Kitty Litter cake is all in the top layer, you can pretty much put anything you like underneath.
Kids Love It - Adults not so much

I made this cake last year. The kids loved it (and ate it) but most of the adults wouldn't even try it. (Those that did liked it). It's just too gross looking. But it got tons of laughs.
