First published in 1977, The Moosewood Cookbook has gone on to fame and fortune as one of the top ten best-selling cookbooks of all time. Quite an accomplishment, and even more so when you consider the fact that this is a vegetarian cookbook.
Mollie Katzen was at the frontier of vegetarian cooking in America and this is the book that led the way. It's as much a staple in modern American Household libraries as say "The Betty Crocker Cookbook" or any authored by Julia Child. But a lot has changed since the 70s, including our dietary habits and preferences along with Mollie's own cooking style. In response to these changes, this cookbook classic was newly revised in 1997. You'll still find the same great recipes that made Mollie and the Moosewood Restaurant, which she co-founded in Ithica, New York, famous. They are just a little lighter, a little healthier than the originals with less butter, cream and oils. The revised edition is still formatted with Mollie's charming hand written text and illustrations, giving the reader the feeling of sharing a friend's favorite recipes. She also gives personal notes with each recipe, including menu and serving suggestions. If you're new to vegetarian cooking, there are also pantry notes, tool recommendations, conversions and modifications. The twenty fifth anniversary edition also contains twenty five brand new recipes that were not available in the original. It is said that classics never go out of style. The information and delicious, wholesome recipes contained in the revised edition of the Moosewood Cookbook are sure to inspire a new generation of cooks and their children to explore a more healthful, natural way of cooking. |
