Review: Part cookbook, part gardening book, and an all around great idea for a kid's book -- not only because it teaches basic skills in both these areas, but also because it helps kids (and maybe even some adults) to make the connection of where their food comes from.

My niece, the mother of a ten year old picky eater, was amazed that her son had become much more adventurous in what he would eat since they had started a garden. Seems if he grew it himself, he was much more interested in trying the food. So when this book crossed my desk a few months later, I already knew the authors were on to something.

Chapters are logically divided by season, highlighting seasonal produce and recipes -- an overall healthy way to eat both for humans and for the planet. There are also basic tasks that gardeners will be undertaking during that season. Key ingredients are broken down - how they're typically used, how they grow, as well as how to know when they're ready for harvest. Lots of full color photos keep the book interesting and informative.

The recipes are simple to prepare, kid friendly, and use wholesome, healthy ingredients. Each season includes info for "in the garden" (simple gardening tasks of the season), as well as"at the table" (blessings suitable for "saying grace").

This book is targeted at 6 to 12 year olds.

Chapters include:

Start an Herb garden; Draw your Garden;

Spring: Featured Ingredients Include: Mint, Peas, New Potatoes, Baby Spinach, and Strawberries.

Summer: Featured Ingredients Include: Basil, Cilantro, Bell Peppers, Sweet Corn, Tomatoes, Green Beans, Zucchini, Eggplant, Raspberries, Blueberries, and Peaches.
