This is, by far, the funniest cookbook I've ever seen. This eclectic collection of vintage recipes - many questionable at best, will provide readers with hours of entertainment, laughs and nostalgic memories of some of the most creative and often unappetizing array of foods ever complied into one convenient volume. If you ever wanted to host an authentic 50s party, complete with some of the most outrageous culinary creations of the era, there is no finer guide.
A lot of these "culinary classics" (many developed by food brands - think Spam, Jell-o, Kraft, Oscar Mayer and more) will seem inedible by today's standards (if in fact they ever were), but they sure are amusing. A big percentage of the recipes are included for their "shock value" or for historical record -- the Crown Roast of Frankfurters for example. But many others are retro food classics - childhood favorites that you may just have to experience again such as Mock Apple Pie, Green Bean Supper Casserole, and more things to do with gelatin and/or Spam than you can imagine.
All the books in the Retro series are designed in classic 50s style with full color artwork and photographs of some of the most unlikely food combinations known to man (Chocolate Sauerkraut Cake, Yankee Baked Bean Pizza, and many more). This is a great gift book for baby boomers, retro food enthusiasts or anyone who loves food history or the 1950's.
