If you're suffering from asthma, experts say the foods you eat can make a difference. Here are some ideas about what foods to eat if you have asthma. For those with asthma, the onset of an asthma attack is unmistakable. And what if the inhaler doesn’t work as well as it should? That could be the case if you are eating high-fat meals, experts say.
A new study by researchers in Australia reveals that eating high-fat meals can not only trigger asthma symptoms but also hinder the effectiveness of albuterol, an important asthma medication used in so-called “rescue inhalers” for stopping airway inflammation.
So what does it all mean? Researchers aren’t sure, but they do say that for myriad reasons, avoiding high-fat meals is a good idea. We asked a dietary expert to help us understand how this could change how people with asthma eat.
“The findings are misleading since healthy fats such as those found in oils, olives, and nuts actually reduce inflammation and help resolve asthma symptoms,” says Jennifer Haas, M.S., R.D. of the Nova Medical & Urgent Care Center, Inc. in Ashburn, Virginia.
What’s important, Haas says, is to avoid bad fats. “Trans and saturated fats clog arteries and create oxidative stress in the body that would lead to such worsening of asthma-related symptoms,” Haas says.
This made us think, could the Mediterranean Diet help? According to the Mayo Clinic, the Mediterranean Diet is a heart healthy diet that emphasizes fruits, vegetables, nuts and grains. Very little red meat is eaten.
Haas adds that the fats eaten in the Mediterranean Diet are the healthy ones that can reduce inflammation.
So, what should you eat? Healthy fats such as those found in olive oil, avocados, walnuts and almonds. Also, eat plenty of fruits and veggies. Grains, like quinoa, wheat and oats, are also good.
